Mrs. Pattison writes that Mary Carr was born in Ireland, the daughter of a
linen merchant who lost most of his fortune by endorsing a note for a
friend.
He, his wife and the only child settled in Baltimore, where both of the
parents died. One of General Shields' brothers in Ireland married a cousin
of Mary Carr.
Immediately after the marriage, James and Mary left for Mazatlan, Mexico,
where he had mining interests. | Mary A CARR

After William's death, his widow and her children moved to Accomac County,
Virginia, where Delight Shields, William's son, married Jerusha Stalker of
Kent County, Maryland, in l719.
That same year their son John Shields was born; in 1747 he married Mary
Chipman, a Mayflower descendant.
John and Mary had three children, Abel (b. 1746), Reuben (b. 1750) and
Elizabeth or Perusia (b. 1753).
Notes for MARY CHIPMAN: Five of Mary Chipman's ancestors arrived in
America on the Mayflower in 1620. See notes to Mary Skiff and John

The Coffins traced their ancestry to 1066 when Sir Richard Coffin
accompanied William the Conqueror from Normandy for the invasion of
England. As a reward, he received the manor at Alwington in the County of
Devonshire.
In 1642, Tristram Coffin moved to Salisbury, Massachusetts. He and eight
other men purchased Nantucket Island from the Indians. It was not fertile
land, and just prior to the Revolution, a large group of members of the
Society of Friends moved to Guilford County, North Carolina.
Deborah Coffin was a cousin of Levi Coffin, who provided refuge, food and
moral support for some 3,000 runaway slaves headed for Canada and freedom.
Slave hunters nicknamed him the president of the underground railroad.
